Gertie what an Amazing woman.

Gertie what an Amazing woman.

In 1990, during my battle with Guillain Barre Syndrome, I had the opportunity to meet an extraordinary woman named Gertie who profoundly influenced my perspective on life. This encounter took place as I underwent rehabilitation, reflecting on the question "why me?" and contemplating my life's purpose.

One day, as I entered the rehab room, I noticed Gertie—an Indigenous woman radiating joy and positivity. Despite her infectious laughter and humor, I wondered why she was undergoing rehabilitation as she seemed perfectly fine. The therapist walked from out the back somewhere and yelled out there here Gertie unveiling two new prosthetic legs for her, Gertie had lost both legs above the knees. Witnessing her unyielding spirit, she embraced the moment with a resounding "You Beauty."

Gertie, with her new prosthetic legs, embarked on a slow, assisted walk, maintaining her infectious laughter. I was astonished by her resilience, humor, and profound zest for life. As she rested, I approached her, expressing my admiration for her strength. In response, Gertie shared valuable life lessons, encouraging me not to be too hard on myself and to cherish life. She emphasized the importance of respecting others, loving oneself, and finding joy in life despite adversities.

Our conversation lasted for hours, and as we parted ways, I hugged Gertie and gave her a kiss on the cheek, feeling a deep connection with this woman, and it felt like we had known each other for a lifetime. Although I never saw her again, the impact of Gertie's wisdom remained etched in my memory. I still think of her often and the encounter we had.

The phrase "I LOVE LIFE," which Gertie shared that day, became a mantra that resonated with me throughout my life. Her words served as a reminder to appreciate the good things, stay positive, and approach life with love and respect. Even today, I find solace and inspiration in these simple yet profound words, and they continue to shape my outlook on life. Gertie, in my heart, is a cherished encounter and perhaps an earth angel who touched my life with her resilience, wisdom, and love for life.

There have been many times I have had one encounter with a person that has lasted three or more hours, and then, as if by magic, I never saw them again, yet the lasting impact of those meetings has resonated with me for a lifetime.

Love, Light and Blessings.
